Description

This is a historical dataset, published in 1940, regarding the marine algae of Alexandria. The survey was conducted by A. H. Nasr, Assistant Director of the Marine Biological Station in Ghardaqa, Egypt and it was facilitated by the Fuad I Institute of Hydrobiology and Fisheries in Alexandria, Egypt. The dataset contains occurrence data of the algae found in the wider marine region of Alexandria within the year 1933.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 24 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

The samplings were realised in one day trips with the use of the vessel "El hoot", a motor boat of 15 metres. In favourable weather conditions a rowing boat was used instead, in order to approach shallow waters and cliffs. The sampler for the benthic assemblages was a dredge with a 20*70 cm opening and in shallow waters the material was taken by diving. Collections on the shore were also made, whenever samples had been washed up onto it.

Study Extent This digitised historical dataset is part of the bigger floristical and faunistical qualitative survey "The fishery grounds near Alexandria" coordinated by Adolf Steuer. It concerns the area along the coasts of the city of Alexandria in Egypt during the year 1933.
Quality Control Taxonomy checked using WoRMS (match taxa tool).

Method step description:

  1. The publication "Steuer Ad., 1935. The fishery grounds near Alexandria. I Preliminary report. Notes and Memoirs No 8, Fisheries Research Directorate, Egypt" http://ipt.medobis.eu/resource?r=egyptexpeditionpreliminaryrepor was used in order to determine the localities of the present dataset.
